Hamada Shoji (1894-1978) was a significant influence on modern pottery of the twentieth century, and a major figure of the mingei folk-art movement, establishing the town of Mashiko as a world-renowned ceramic centre. Hamada's work was influenced by a wide variety of folk ceramics, including English medieval pottery, Okinawan stonewares and Korean pottery. His works were not merely copies of the styles he studied, but were unique products of his own creative energy.
Hamada was designated a Living National Treasure in 1955.
Numerous books have been written on Hamada and a number of documentary films made on his life and work and his works are exhibited in most of the major museums in the world.
